  1. Yeah, for what I'm doing image sequences aren't a great option. I'm going back and forth between after effects and premiere a lot and having the ability to quicklook files is huge for me.
  2. Hmmm, hadn't heard of ProRes 4444 XQ. Looks like it might what I was looking for, thanks!
  3. I've been using QT Animation as an intermediate codec for years now without really questioning it. I saw on a thread recently someone mentioned using prores 4444 instead and it got me wondering what other people are using. Is Animation dead and people are using QT PNG or DNxHD or something else? What's good these days?
  4. Well as a very simple example, you could have a rectangle shape as a text background and have it automatically resize to fit the size of your text layer. Not as relevant to what I do now, but at my last job I used to make a lot of mograph templates for editors who didn't know AE well enough to size and fit shape layers. Previously the only way to get a text layer's size was through scripting, so this eases a lot of that.
  5. omg finally http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2014/12/after-effects-cc-2014-2-13-2.html
  6. Yeah, I got around it. For some reason I thought it was doable in the past. Would be nice to have open to expressions though, so you could have tons of shape layers inherit their gradient from a master layer. Off to the feature request page...
  7. I'm trying to option-click the 'Colors' field of a gradient fill on a shape layer so that I can pick whip it to another and nothing happens when I click it. Am I going crazy, or is something broken in my AE? Anybody else able to do it?
  8. Under "Force" on it's dynamics tag, crank up the Follow Position value.
  9. Mine's a simple little script I wrote for AE to emulate the C4D's alt+g function. I binded (bound?) it to alt+g in after effects so that it runs whenever I hit the shortcut. If your focus is on the project window, it groups whatever items you've got selected under a new folder. If you're focused on a comp, it groups whatever layers you have selected under a new null that is positioned at the center of the layers (though I haven't had the time to make it work for 3D layers yet). If anyone's interested: http://pastebin.com/0PS59ngB [note: beware bugs, i.e. 3D layers]
  10. I just came across this bug for the first time the other day and it blew my mind that it is actually a thing. I have Yosemite installed on my personal machine and can confirm the bug is still there. Pretty ridiculous that it's still a thing. FWIW I did find a solution to the bug in another thread. All you have to do is just not touch anything once you start collecting files. As soon as you move the mouse/pen it errors out. To be honest I haven't seen anything in the new OS that makes it worth the update anyways. I'm not a fan of the new UI, the new spotlight search doesn't work well. Apple's continuing the iOS-ification of OSX and abandoning the pro market... won't be upgrading on my work machine.
  11. Dear lord the font on that keyboard...
  12. I'm apparently in the minority but for some reason I feel like adding my two cents. I've been on CC since the outset and haven't noticed any of the connection problems or debilitating bugs that people have mentioned. While I'm not super fond of paying 50 bucks a month to Adobe for the rest of the foreseeable future, so far it hasn't been that bad. You can still deduct it from your taxes as an independent contractor, and it's opened me up to a lot of other software that I wouldn't have purchased in the past: inDesign, Audition, SpeedGrade, DreamWeaver etc. Plus you get Typekit and 20 gigs of cloud storage. Not deal-makers, but nice additions.
  13. I used to use Jeff Almasol's scripts all the time and now it appears his site is down and all his scripts have disappeared from aescripts. Does anybody have a copy of rd_slicer they could link to? Bonus points if you can post any of the other freebie scripts that were once available. Thanks!
  14. Sort of off-topic, but what was the take-away from that poll you posted back in the beginning of the year? The one about spending this year making AE faster vs. developing new features. BTW, as someone who spends a lot of time setting up lower third templates for editors, the 'editable text templates in premiere' thing sounds awesome!
  15. Fonts in use is one of my favorites, though it's not updated as often as it used to be.
  16. Thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback!
  17. One of the best tips I've found about the graph editor, that is in no way related to easing or animation, is using alt+z or alt+middle mouse button to scale your graph's dimensions. Shut off that little "Auto zoom to graph height" button. Makes it so much easier to navigate and make sense of your curves.
  18. Just finished cutting my new reel and want to know what you guys think. Thanks!
  19. Out of curiosity, what kind of rig did you use for the camera animation? Was it one continuous camera or a composite of a couple?
  20. Pretty sure you don't need to do it in 3d. Looks like a standard AE glow. Try changing Glow Colors from Original Colors to A&B colors and setting them manually. Then use mattes so that the glow is only affecting specific objects. Pull the threshold down to like 20 or 25%, crank up the radius, and you should be good.
  21. Vimeo launched a completely reengineered player this month. Probably still working out some kinks.
  22. I think I know the answer already, but is there any way to automatically run a script as soon as an AE project is loaded (on Mac)? I know there's a script flag you can use that works for Windows, but last time I checked, the feature isn't supported on Macs. Is this still true for AE CS6 and CC? My one thought for a workaround is to have a script run as part of a ScriptUI panel which is auto-loaded when AE is opened, but unfortunately, window layouts aren't saved with projects, so it would run EVERY TIME AE is opened and not just on a per project basis. Thanks for any help!
  23. I've got a PSD I'm trying to import into After Effects and it's giving me problems. One of the layers of my PSD is from an imported video, so PS CS6 put ALL of my layers into it's handy new Video Timeline and all of my layers now have video properties (in points, out points, duration etc.) Not a big deal until I try to import it into AE. Now all the layers in the comp are being treated as video layers with their properties carried over from Photoshop. I've gotta go back and manually reset the ins and outs to where they should be, and if I want a layer to be longer than it's imported duration, I've gotta time remap it. It's a pain. Does anyone know how to remove the timeline properties from the PSD or at least get AE to ignore them??
