Creation and destruction. I'm starting all over. Again. I have made three errors in the past weeks. At least. 1. Impatience. 2. I should familiarize myself more with the principles of Zen perhaps. My work needs to be as simple as possible, and I can't grow too attached to it. 3. Clearly the "no news is good news" policy I've had for myself isn't working. I will now only work on a single piece until I hear multiple times that it is done. Whether that takes 2 weeks or 2 months shouldn't matter. I'd rather have a 10 second reel of two solid pieces than the systemic hemorrhage I've subjected people to. Again, the observations I've received here have been invaluable. If people are willing, I shall continue my baptism of fire, no matter how masochistic I may appear. bob

Chris- Thanks for your comments. Could you be a little more specific? How are things "off"? I don't have any money for classes, so books and sites are primarily what I look at. Can you recommend any? I'm the first to admit that I don't know much about design, but I think it's best to learn by doing, even if I'm (at least initially) making some glaring errors. Also, about the frequency of my posts: I have been posting my work every step of the way so if an observation is made, I can relatively easily make the necessary changes. If I don't hear any response for a couple days or so, then I just move forward with things. I could perfectly understand that I had to start my reel all over when the previous one never was exposed to a single critique. However now I won't start all over again, as I don't think it's necessary. Thanks again, Bob

I just uploaded this new version. http://vimeo.com/30859200 It's a primitive beginning for the titles. I'm thinking I'll animate them (as this is motion graphics....) Aaron: thanks for the suggestions. I'll start incorporating them as soon as I can. Thanks, Bob

I know this has been mentioned before, but I think the reel ends rather abruptly. What's the best solution to this? Should I have titles with my info on either end?

Hi- it's been awhile. i was working on an unrelated piece that took about a week to render. here's a draft of the animation i'm going to add next. http://vimeo.com/30539940 this one's on kind of a short notice since i need to start rendering it this evening (in about 15 hours hence). also, with all due respect (i very much appreciate everyone's insights!) i presently do have to think about how long the initial creation of this reel is going to take. obviously it's an ongoing, endless process, but quite honestly, i'm sure like a lot of people, i'm looking for work and need to find it sooner than later. i'm not rushing through things, but i am trying to progress at a fairly consistent pace. i realize there are gaps in my ability and knowledge. this is because i've been working in a near total void ever since i tried in vain to enter the "job market" in 2008 right when the recession hit. my timing was perfect. i know that i'm not alone in this and am attempting my utmost to be constructive and persistent... let me know what you think. finally, the first few pieces that don't having easing now will be redone.

Hi- Here's the latest version: http://vimeo.com/29938899 I added easing to the second to last clip. I'll post a more detailed response tomorrow. Thanks, Bob

cosmo- these are all great suggestions. with the pylon logo i tried adding some easing, but learned that i'll have to set aside some time to learn how it works, which i'll do tomorrow. in answer to your question, these are hypothetical logos i'm creating (with the exception of the capital I logo which was for a commercial). yes they all do have a similar feel as i was trying to get away from the aesthetic i had before. i'll have a new style to the next clip i create. i also like your suggestion about having other animations other than logo resolves. honestly the creation of this reel still feels daunting for me, but i'm just trying to take things one step at a time. i can see the progress from all my previous reels (which i keep), however gradual it might be. thanks again! bob

Hello again- Here's the latest version of my reel: http://vimeo.com/29796612 Suggestions? Bob

OK so riddle me this: the fourth clip i've added is from a commercial i helped with. the client wanted the logo exactly as it's shown in the reel, so i can't really alter it. i know now that i could create something better, but since this is one of only a few pro bono projects i had, should i include it in the reel? if not, i'll leave it out. thoughts? new reel: http://www.vimeo.com/29668063 thanks! bob

florio- thanks for the insight. it's funny you suggest that, since after learning more about animation, i've decided to use easing in my clips from now on. i'll try and make the time to rework what i have as well. thanks again! bob

Hi- I was able to add the third clip and refine things overall, creating a somewhat different aesthetic. http://vimeo.com/29585400 Comments? Bob

Hi- So I gave it some thought, and yes, I'm starting my reel all over again. Here's the beginning of it now. http://www.vimeo.com/29490269 Halfway through the "Animator's Survival Kit." I'm planning on using easing in my future clips. Also most importantly, as soon as my reel is recreated I plan on somehow at least having informational interviews of some kind with studios in New York City. Let me know what you think. Thanks! Bob
