  1. I would like it better if you rephrased that as ..."Avid editor error".
  2. Searched via Google: QuickTime X is really cool and one of the many great improvements in Snow Leopard, but I was really surprised to find out that QuickTime X no longer automatically plays movie files on open, you’d think since I just opened the file I’d want to watch the movie! Thankfully resolving this is just a matter of entering a command in the Terminal. While digging around to figure this out I also uncovered some more QuickTime X hacks, like forcing QuickTime to stay full-screen even when it’s in the background, or how to force the titlebar to always show or always hide. Each one of these commands can be reversed by changing the value from 1 to 0 or vice versa Autoplay QuickTime Movies on Open: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGPlayMovieOnOpen 1 Automatically show subtitles and closed captioning: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGEnableCCAndSubtitlesOnOpen 1 Never show titlebar: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGCinematicWindowDebugForceNoTitlebar 1 Always show title bar & controller: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGUIVisibilityNeverAutohide 1 Disable rounded corners in QuickTime X Player: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGCinematicWindowDebugForceNoRoundedCorners 1 Keep playing movies full screen even when you leave QuickTime as inactive window: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGFullScreenExitOnAppSwitch 0
  3. OK but a pixel is a pixel, is a pixel. On an HDTV that's 55" there are still only 1920 pixel across. On your iPhone, there are still only 1920 pixel across(landcaspe). Now the pixels on your TV are big compared to your iPhone because the TV is bigger, duh. Who cares how many ppi it is, it doesn't matter. In a print world video is 72dpi.
  4. There is a PC prores decoder. So you can read prores, just not write back. http://support.apple.com/downloads/Apple_ProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_for_Windows May not work for 4:4:4:4 prores.
  5. As I am sure you now... h.264 is the devil as source material. I have no idea about CS5. But it takes a lot of CPU to decompress the h.264 when you are working with it.
  6. People can accept HD downloads from DG...but no one want to pay for the $250 per spot per destination for HD. They completely outpriced themselves. We only send SD via DG becasue it's like $45.
  7. Spots on Cable are all hubbed from a few locations, quite possibly not even in the city that they are airing. Although they do accept DG Fastchannel for delivery, they then take that fine and redigitize it into their playback system. More than likely they are using a very low bit rate Mpeg2 or h.264. It drives me crazy to see as well, but I am happy that at least my stuff looks good on my station in 1080i. It also doesn't help that the locally produced cable spots, are poorly produced and probably using DV or HDV... Editied, Mastered and then compressed to death. 3 points for over the air broadcast in HD!

    leaving a job?

No one in their right mind would be upset since you are just a part-time employee. Is the new potential job full-time? Permanent? Benefits? i understand that you have some loyalty to your current employer, and that is admirable. I would wait to say anything until you have a solid offer from the new job, then think about your options. If you want the new job, tell your current boss and he may up the offer. He may make you full-time. If he says well, sorry to see you go, then take the new job if it's something you want. However, don't screw around too much and try and play one off the other. That will only end bad. If the new job makes an offer, but you don;t like all of the details, then thank them and tell them that you are no longer interested and try again. My thoughts on the matter.
  9. You pretty much just described Smoke on Linux as well.
  10. Free 30 day Trail on MAC if you didn't know. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?id=14223504&siteID=123112
  11. I have been running Smoke since V5. Now on 2011. It does take a bit of wrapping your mind around how it thinks, and some of it is pretty old school thought process. But it continues to be developed and each version is better than the last. The-area.com has lots of good tutorials and tips and forums for Autodesk and Smoke/Flame

    qt and alpha

In QT, under the movie properties, there is a option to adjust the viewing mode of the alpha.

    Prores on windows

Is it prores 422 or prores4444? I don't think the free decoder works with prores4444.
  14. I feel better about myself knowing that they bought a stock effect. :0
