  1. Hi there guys, I 've been following the Design for Production course in Learn Squared. Mark Rigley uses Octane, and while watching the course I was able to get some nice displacements. While trying to replicate the shaders in Arnold, I'm just not able to reach that same displacement. It seems Arnold tries to distort the geometry while Octane just pushes and pulls the separate polygons I have on an already dense mesh. I know I'm supposed to subdivide things with the Arnold parameters tag, but I already have enough polygons for the effect I want... Does anyone have an idea how to reach that same displacement using Arnold? Here's the Octane displacement: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-X0hS60UA2Gc0xiUFBrY2pKY3M Here's how it looks in Arnold: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-X0hS60UA2GSFlGbEFhdjA5WU0 https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-X0hS60UA2GeWlmcDEzRlBmSG8 * The scale of the textures is the same, and I'm using the same bitmaps. I basically replicated the shader network from Octane to Arnold. Thanks!

  4. Hi Guys! I´m building a new computer to render with Octane+C4D and compose the output in AE, with heavy emphasis in GPU power for Octane. What do you think overall? your opinions are more than welcome. I have an extra SSD m2 for the AE cache and 128 GB ram. Also a raid with 2xSSD mirroring for program files and working footage. An extra tera HD would be use as archive. Do you think the processor would do well with AE and C4D? Will Octane benefit at all from an extra SSD for cache? And from the 128 GB Ram?? Do you think cooling can be an issue with the current setup? Thanks a lot in advance! 5. Hi, I've been learning motion graphics in AE and C4D over the last year or so and feel it's time to consider upgrading my PC. Below is my current build: - GA-Z77X-UD5H motherboard - Intel Core i7-3770K - Gigabyte GTX 770 2GB (OC Edition) - 32GB Patriot Viper 3 - Sandisk Extreme 120GB SSD for OS - Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD for AE disk cache - 1TB Seagate HDD for project files - 400GB Seagate HDD for renders - Corsair Carbide 500R case - Corsair HX750 PSU I've also just bought: - 2x Samsung 850 Pro 256GB - Noctua NH-D15 cooler I plan to use more of C4D as time goes on and have been advised to get into Octane rendering. With that in mind: Can anyone recommend any worthwhile upgrades or replacements for this build? Would adding a second GTX 770 be worthwhile or do I need to replace the GPU for something more powerful and with more memory, ideally? I'm open to considering replacing the CPU and/or motherboard, if a new CPU would substantially benefit my work? How is best to configure my drives? Thanks for your help!
  6. Hi, For primarily Octane rendering, I just installed two Nvidia Quadro k5000 gfx cards into our Mac Pro (Early 2009). The performance seems really really slugish for two high-end cards and seems to be on par with the one card GTX580 that I just removed. Is this normal?? The render times seem like 5x as long for a single frame vs my PC at home with very inexpensive average dual GTX660s (2 gigs mem each). We are on Yosemite I have CUDA Driver Version: 7.5.20 NVIDIA Web Driver: 346.02.03f01 (Up to date) Anyone have any ideas, or is this just what you get with dual K5000s?? I guess my main question is, if anyone has a similar setup, is my machine just too old to handle TWO K5000 Quadros??
  7. Hi, So long story short. I bought an Imac (stupid move) now I'm going to sell and finally move to the dark side. Last time I used a PC was 10 years ago. Looking for a build which initially will have one GPU and then in a few months allow me to add a second. I'll be using Octane render for C4D. I'm totally useless with part picking but a guy at work is looking at doing the same thing. Is there anything in this list that isn't going to be good? Also if anyone has an opinion of the Del Ultrasharp 27 that would be great I'm sure everyone has there own variation here and there but I'm really just making sure that if i buy these parts I'm not going to regret it! 14. The time has finally come to leave our mac pros behind. We want to expand our use of Octane in C4D, so we have been looking at 4 GPU PC options. Does anyone here have experience with these? It looks like Boxx and a couple others have some options, but a custom built system seems to be the best value right now. How does a workstation based on these parts sound? We may do some GPU render nodes based on a stripped down version of this too (basically 1 HD, and a lot cheaper CPU). Is Windows 7 still the best choice?
  15. Hi fellow mographers, Just wondering if anyone has some insight or advice on a Octane hardware solution, preferably Mac based so as to keep my setup on all the same os. Octane GPU rendering will be perfect for some of my personal projects, so this is going to be a home setup. I currently have a 27" iMac to use as the monitor and my budget is between £1k ~ £2k so I've been thinking about getting a used Mac Pro from ebay, perhaps a 6 core - then sticking a decent GPU card in it, or two semi good ones. Has anyone got any experience on such a set up? I've been doing some googling, and as I'm someone who is not familiar with building PC's etc I'm totally confused by this talk of 'flashing' a GPU card etc. So some of the technical details I've read so far have been a bit off putting for someone who just wants to plug stuff in and get going. From what I've researched so far it would seem I could put a Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 inside and then use a separate power supply to power that. Am I on the right tracks with that sort of research? Also - I see mention of Octane Cloud rendering, but apart from a mention on Octanes blog I don't see any further news/info. If that's an option I'd consider it too. If anyone has some insights, I'd really appreciate it.
