Hi community, i recently coded a plugin mainly for my own use and finally decided to share it with you all I found the native C4D Stage Object to be quite unhandy when it comes to scene cuts between different scenes, lighting environments etc in the viewport. With this plugin you can add null objects under which you add your "scene content" and activate/deactivate them via the interface. If you add camera Nulls the Camera under the null gets automatically activated/deactivated. Let me know if you find this useful or if you find any bugs. I tested it on WIN/MAC R15-R17.   2. I'm curious as to other designers process, especially when it comes to adding music. At what point do you add music to your comps? Do you usually have a song picked out before you start anything? Or is it more of an after thought? Do you collaborate with a sound designer? For myself, I find importing music helps get me started. But depending on the project I might just add something in last minute. Of course adding to the complication is working with budget and getting permissions. For my personal reel though, picking the music was an interesting exercise I did early on which heavily influenced me. I wonder in what situations you would just start making something without any music, really. When you do have a song, what do you do next? I usually listen to the song on loop, adding markers, taking notes on things I think are important. What's your process?
  3. Learn a Cinema4D to After Effects workflow that saves you time when doing a lot of post work. Plan now and prevent re-renders.

There are many talented people in here who have been at this longer than I, so I'm curious: once you have a sense for exactly what you're trying to create (done with any 2D sketching or Photoshop storyboards for example), which components of the workflow do you tackle first in C4D and why? I know for movie production there's a pre-arranged pipeline where one group is working on the models, another the rigs, and so on. But when you're a one man team (or one woman team) and you have to produce a fairly complex scene / animation, how do you order things to avoid headaches and get through it as quickly as possible while maintaining quality? Do you first handle the background and lighting, using pre-existing models and materials close to what you will be using, in order to "set the stage"... then start customizing your models, textures and any particle systems... then set up your keyframes and camera moves, then start tinkering with your renderer for final output? Or do you model first under generic lighting, then set up the keyframes and camera moves, then work on the textures and lighting together, seeing how things play off one another, before finally working on the render settings? Part of this question has to do with the new Reflectance setup in R16... after tinkering with it the last month and still a lot ot learn, I imagine the way it's set up might cause some changes in people's workflow / how they approach the process of getting from A to B.
  5. hi, we are soon starting a project with a very very big resolution (14160 x 1200). it is a 360 degree piece, containing mostly 2D stuff (moving matte painting) which we plan to do in AE. some 3D stuff will be done in C4D. the big bump is obviously the render time but i guess there is no way around that. my biggest concern though is that it probably will be a big pain to work in AE with such big resolutions. i would be very grateful for useful tips on how to tackle such a project: my thoughts so far: -be very organized -make heavy use of proxys -prerender a lot -> again use proxys -have certain comps in a smaller resolution and blow them up overall questions: -is it smart to save BG pics and such as png or jpg instead of psd files to reduce the data size? -is there a way to work with particular in a smaller resolution and then somehow upscale the results? (colapse transformation)? again, would be very grateful for some workflow tipps. thx

I'm currently working on a project that has me rendering lots (as many as 96 passes in a single render) of image sequences out of After Effects over and over again and repeatedly creating all the folders required to keep all this data organized is both tedious and a pain in the ass. I'm sure there has to be a way to automate this but don't really know where to begin looking. I'm looking for something like the FOLDER SETUP script Adobe puts out that does basically the same thing in your OS. Sadly for this project I need a Windows XP compatible solution, but I mostly work in OSX so anything would be helpful.
  7. Just curious to see if anyone has been using the physical renderer on any projects lately, or found certain situations where it came in handy. I was recently working on a shot where I had to create a more photo realistic background and in hind sight wonder if the physical renderer would have been the better choice from a workflow or quality standpoint. Haven't messed with it too much since it first came out and was curious who's been making cool stuff with it, if you have some samples or insight please post. Thanks, Scott

I'm sure many of you have had this thought before, but I was wondering if there is a resource where different rendering techniques / effects / plugins have been tested in After Effects to find the most efficient way to work. I am aware that this may be easier said than done, as things vary greatly on your hardware, software and project setup but I always wonder things like.. how much time does a complex (or even simple) luma/alpha matte add to the render time? how much does applying layer styles as opposed to an effect in AE affect it? does pressing CAPS and hiding the composition view really save render times? what are the optimal encode settings for pre-rendered footage? I'm not really asking somebody to answer all of these questions for me, but I was wondering whether it would be worth my time extensively testing these different options, or would the results only ever reliably apply to my machine with my current setup. Or maybe somebody has done it already! J
