graymachine site re-launch

Recommended Posts

So, after wresting with a new content manager (Joomla!), I think I have it figured out enough to re-launch my site.

For those that do frequent (and sometimes remote) updates to their site, I highly recommend using "Joomla!". It takes a little figuring out, but once it is all in place, it runs like a breeze, and updates are done via any browser from anywhere in the world. It's free, often a 'one-click install' from your service provider. There is a massive development community out there making all kinds of extensions for it, too. It's pretty cool.

Anyway, check it all out at www.graymachine.com

Nice! Does Joomla allow browser based upload/updating?

Yeah, that's pretty much what you do. You log into a PHP based admin panel and publish news articles, blog entries, etc. But the capabilities go way beyond something like wordpress or blogger. There are tons of extensions to tie in Flash, AJAX, QuickTime, you name it. So, yeah, I suppose to get rich content, you need would need to FTP the cool files to your site.. .or you can upload files via several Joomla extensions, too.

I'm just not big on HTML, which is why I dig Joomla. I really like having the freedom to add content without worrying about screwing up my cell layout, or whatever.

I also did the site for my goofy 80s band with it, too. www.goto10.us

Yeah Gray, the site looks really awesome! I tried getting into a content management based site a while back, but I got cross eyed trying to figure out how to install it and get it to work, I think I got it working but I couldn't really figure out how to make the site look nice, change the appearance and shit like that...I didnt really have the time to go crazy and try to figure it out so i just gave up.

But good stuff, it really looks nice!

Nice site! I've been wrestling with CSS for my site for making content changes/additions easier, still trying to figure it all out.

In the "Booking" paragraph, there is a space missing after "email me".

Talking about improvements:

you scaled this button demo.png with HTML. Doesn't look nice.

Hey Grey, did you make the template yourself, or did you download it? I was looking around at some joomla page templates and from what I saw, they all seem to suck. If I used it, which I want to do, I would want to make the template myself...

Did you do it yourself, and if so, how hard was it?

It was a template that I heavily modified. The templates come with layered PSD files to modify and all of the PHP files and whatnot that all tie together to get it to work. I will say, Joomla is kind of a bugger to do without a predesigned template. But it's not impossible at all.. it's mostly a PHP file and a CSS file, with corresponding images. There are tutorials out there that cover how to do it, I just had no interest.

Mostly, I look at where the slices are in PS and figure out what determines the boxes, menus, background, etc. Once I figured it all out on the first site I did, I got the relaunch done in less than one day.

Aww shit.. calling me out on my sloppy HTML. See? I said my HTML sucks.

In all fairness, it is a 24bit PNG. But you are right, I really shouldn't scale it.

It's acutally a 32bit PNG (24 for RGB + 8 for Alpha).

Which means that IE users won't have the transparency effect.

Unless you use the pngbehavior.htc

You can find it here:

http://webfx.eae.net/dhtml/pngbehavior/pngbehavior.html

It's a file that you upload to the server and in the CSS you write

img {
  behavior: url("pngbehavior.htc");
}

I just had "24" on the mind as PS saves it as a "PNG-24" with a transparency switch.. but yes, I've heard of RGB+A.. here and there :P

I switched it to a GIF anyway. Thanks for the IE tip, though.. didn't know that.

Now, all I need is more CONTENT! I've got a lot of cool stuff that I can't POST.. IT SUCKS!!! Lots of NDAs are ruining my cred. Yes, I do indeed have more demo material than working at NBC.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

A friend and I are starting a photography club at work, and figure we'll put up a simple Joomla site with resources for everybody on it. I'm glad to hear of a satisfied user. We'll have to get on that right away! By "we" I mean my friend, he's the main web guy at our shop. I'll stick to splats, swirls, and deer heads.

Re-re-relaunch.

I still need to do some tweaking, but graymachine.com is strictly a motion graphics resource now, with articles, reviews, tips, freebies and the occasional commercial ad to keep the lights on and baby formula in the cupboard. I'll be moving my portfolio elsewhere to give graymachine a better identity. Stop by and check it out when you have a chance

Congrats Graymachine,

I have being outdated lately,glad you didnt stop Making it Look Great 3 looks very interesting( the price is a gift ). As i was doing some some type of of grass fx but had to use C4D instead, one thing i like about AE is the fast previews and the not rendering penalty you have. It keeps being my tool of choice .

the portal-like feel of the new site seems a better fit for the scope and scale of your offerings. Congrats again and thanks for sharing so many things that have made my work/life easier!

I totally agree. Thanks for checking it out!!

New freebies and useful quick tips are going up just about every single day. Right now I am working on a review of Radium Glow, and I've got some tutorials planned as well.

Granted, I just got put on hold for the rest of September on a job, but I'll keep putting my best effort to make this a useful resource for everyone.
