Cefalù B)

cefalu, in sicily, is a great little place to stop for a day. Absolutely amazing little town. You can hike up a mountain the town sits at the base of, and there are ruins from an ancient fort you can check out. One of my favorite places.

And go to greece if you can. Totally hot women, jovial people, and amazing food.

im looking to start in italy and work my way up through eastern europe and then back to spain.. ive started doing some research but its a little overwhelming. i know about euro rail and rhine air and that stuff for getting around and i think i have a place to stay in florence and vienna.. otherwise, ive got some planning to do. any tips, funny stories or promises of a couch to sleep on are appreciated

I definitely recommend the guide books from Rick Steves. They're pretty good & he has them for evey country.

yeah, it takes a lot of planning & research but it's worthed.

Use cash there. Most credit cards charge an extra fee for every transaction except Capitol One)

Looks like about 20% of Americans own a passport......which is a much higher figure than I had been told (I heard 7%).........well that's if this guys facts are right:

http://www.gyford.com/phil/writing/2003/01...any_america.php

Of that 20% it seems that a large proportion of them (58 percent in some publications) are Democrats.

Oh yeah and Europe:

Cash is king

Watch the Italians when they add up your bill.

Berlin is where it's at, you wont get a better döner anywhere else in the world

Ride the Napoli underground for free, everyone else does

Prage, Bratislava, Croatia.......are all worth spending some quality time in

London is worth looking/laughing at but not staying in

Don't pay for internet just go to the local library with your passport

Spain and Portugal are fantastic but stay away from the coasts, unless you're up in the North west...get a car and drive like mad.

Don't listen to Rick Steves!

Yeah that's my 5 cents

How many americans have passports anyways smile.gif.

Rick Steve has his uses. For example, if you steer a wide path around the places he loves, you'll never see the kinds of twinkie people who love him, and that's a simple way to improve your trip right from the start.

The only downside of that is that you'd never experience the cioppino in the fortress overlooking Vernazza, which makes otherwise intelligent people fall down on their knees to lick the spillage off the granite.

Actually I take back what I said about Rick Steves, the man deserves some respect, according to Wikipedia:

"Steves once wrestled a grizzly bear into submission while on a camping trip near Yakima, WA"

Wow

Also there are some very apt personal quotes from the man at the end of the article.

does it really mater how many americans have passports? It's not as if were sandwiched next to so many foreign countries where we can hop on a train and take a weekend in the swiss alps spur of the moment.

hey man.. whatever makes people feel better about themselves :)

cnn reported today that 20million people visited europe last year.. id say thats a healthy amount of travelers. either way, countries that can afford to and do travel across oceans should feel lucky.

Hi,

from a spaniard (watch us, we have a socialist prime minister) living in Switzerland (watch them they have a 20 % immmigrant population, but... what the hell, the muslims are not rioting!)

First I completley agree about bills said before, appart from Italy I'd add also Spain, Portugal and France...maybe 20 % chances they make a little "mistake" on your bill if you are a tourist. Nothing bad anyway, even when I am at home they rip me off in taxis and some beach restaurants!.

From Spain I would recomend 2 extremes, north San Sebastian (the best food you can dream of, beautiful small city, very kind people) and south, the Tarifa area (atlantic coast, gorgeous boys & girls, fun but relax...maybe becouse those high quality things they smoke there for such a nice price).

From Switzerland, I would recommend first bring some spanish food with you :)... have a foundue in the medieval city of Gruyere, watching the Alps. Take a walk by the lake in Luzern, beautiful city. This weekend I go to Lugano in the Italian part of Switzerland, they told me is also great.

In Switzerland expect everything to be 2 or 3 times more expensive than Spain.

In order to avoid rioting muslims just try to read more than one news source...or try BBC.
