History of America

Recommended Posts

I know I know, all the hype, it's mk12 for chrissakes.

I don't think there was any such thing as a "hype", but considering the high standards established by MK12 themselves, the film was really a disappointment. I'll have to watch it again with clearer mind some time next week, but I was neither amused nor excited the first time around. It somehow doesn't take off. Too many dull stereotypes without really any original twist (but then again, I'm European to the bone and may not get some jokes) and that toon look hurt my eyes. Sorry, I think MK12 better stick to music videos, ads and the occasional movie opener. Doing "real" movies just does seem a bit beyond what they can do in terms of delivering the goods.

Regardless of critique, I personally appreciate the fact that MK12 made History of America available free of charge. They could have so easily went the whole Belief/UNTITLED 003: EMBRYO route and charged people to view it... so cheers gents!

Tough going, had to struggle to get through to the end. Visually there were some nice moments.

The text book sequence, mumbling and the arm chair man were the main things that I did not like.

The jokes and visuals all came across as a bit muddy.

Various very nice ideas and various good looking parts that came together to equal less than the whole...

Let down by narrative.

However: thanks for making it and releasing it free.

found it quite boring, didn't get the context of the jokes, if there were any... and the dialogue audio was too quiet, and the explosions too loud. didn't really dig the posterising filter on the footage either...

Well are they condemned forever to fulfill expectations on them?

I think it's their own trip, there's this strong ironic narration we're not seeing while we search for cool transitions. Beside the style (I think the camera shots are amazing) there's their art piece, their representation and parody of these days. While we're waiting for some 45˚rotation in which we can recognize them we miss they're telling us that history changes depending on who tells it. And that should let us think. Their big mistake was giving us a teaser on which we could build those expectations..

Woah woah woah.. I dont remember MK12 ever getting hyped up to be the shit when it comes to short films. I didnt find it so painful to get through.. Was it a great story? Not necessarily but there were some fun moments and overall I'd say it was an amusing short. Highly stylized (not necessarily to my taste, but for the greater nondesign related population it might not be regarded so negatively). Kudos to MK12 for atleast doing it. Sometimes thats half the battle. Winning over mograph.net is a whole other battle I reckon' ;)

This was MK12 at there best! I have been waiting a long time for this, and i wasn't let down at all. Some of the physical acting could have been better. I love the Narrator guy and the opening seq. The only part that could have been shorter was the book part. Over all it was AMAZING!! two thumps way up! ;)! Oh and BIG kudos for making it free! Will there be a dvd release with all the behind the scene of how it was made? I hope!

I think silatix pretty much nailed it, but from me personally, it wasn't all that interesting. After seeing the teaser from wayyyy back I was already in a condition of uninterest. I really didn't like the visual treatment at all and the idea in general didn't seem like my cup of tea. Then the whole idea of cowboys vs astronaughts came in and I was pleased. The acting from the cowboys was really atrocious and most of the time they really felt like they were just on a green screen stage. IE their movement was slow and forced.

It basically felt a bit like a student film that gets passed around at film festivals, only with higher production value and some nice MK12 animations thrown in.

But like silatix said, more power to them for doing it. I'd rather they tried and failed (at least failed for me) than not try at all. I hope it does well though with the general market; they do deserve to get some attention for this.

If "The Right Stuff" taught us anything, it's that cowboys and astronauts are one in the same.

Alright, obviously being part of the minority here I gotta speak up and say I really liked it. Especially the final showdown sequence between the Astronaut Leader and the Cowboy Leader - that shit looked niiiice. I'm not a fan of the posterized look on the live action footage, but in certain parts like the sequence I just mentioned, it looked great.

You should also know that I really dug the Casino Royale opening sequence ;)
