Some video effects I wrote....

Recommended Posts

Hello there, folks,

I'm a programmer who writes video effects. I posted one of them here a year or so ago, thought I'd show off the latest stuff....

http://methodart.blogspot.com/2007/09/some...ith-messrs.html

http://methodart.blogspot.com/2006/11/i-wo...l-as-still.html

http://methodart.blogspot.com/2007/09/been...-while-but.html

They were conceived as real-time interactive effects, and they all run at interactive rates (albeit at small, web-cam resolutions), but I'm thinking of possibly packaging them up as plugins (the waves one is already a directx plugin).

I've had some interest from a couple visual effects companies, and I guess I'm trying to stir up a little more :-)

Cheers,

Kevin Atkinson

P.S. Apologies if you've already seen this on vfxtalk....

I'd be willing to bet Apple would be very interested these for a future version of photobooth. Very nice work!

ummm..... could you please write ae plugins for these immediately? let me know where to preorder.

plugins that create new temporal interpretations, rather than just visually are scarce.

That's so gondry-esque. Watch out for his brother (olivier) he's a programmer too.

Ooh, flattery will get you everywhere... I'm a total Gondry nut. As a matter of fact, one of my secret ambitions is to be the next Olivier Gondry (Michel is a little out of my league ;-).

you're probably going to be rich in not too long. these effects are very cool. I love the way the one looks when you move forward in z space and there is the delay in distortion (or whatever its called). The painterly one is also very cool.

Its rare to see unique stuff, so bravo!

this is SOOOOOOOOOO cool... damn, how long did it take you to develop these codes/algorithms?

Hey thanks, man! They actually varied enormously in the amount of time they took to do. For instance, the one called "face time" took 3 hours from idea to completion, where as the flowy, painterly one probably took 80 hours (I was determined to write the fluid simulation code myself, which was a pain and a half).

It's nice to see the people behind the code, esp. when you come to take advantage of plug-ins, etc. on a daily basis.

Also cool to see them before they blow up, which you will if you keep this up.

Posting here and other places, and showing artists your work is a great idea, because all of them are thinking "What could I do with

gear like that?"

I'd even send the best comments to prospective buyers, to show them the grass roots interest. Good selling point.

Yup, that's the idea ;-) I work for an industrial automation and machine vision company, so I don't get much contact with folks in the motion graphics or vfx biz, so online forums are about the only place I can get feedback right now.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever looked into going the Technical Director route for VFX and animation?

Looking through your blog it looks like you have some pretty sharp Maya TD/Effects skills and clearly your math and coding are on the ball.

A lot of studios are looking for good Effects TDs.

Lol! Yeah, I coulda been in pictures by now.... My company offered me money to stay where I am, and the wife said, for that money, we're staying. Still looking for that plan B though.

Say hi to Kert for me! He's used to me whoring myself out on forums like this ;-)

Well, that was the original plan. Here's the story: Four years ago I was working at an unbelievably sucky programming job in Michigan. One night I saw the Bjork video "All is Full of Love", and it friggin' blew me away, and I decided that I wanted to use my programming skills in the service of making something as beautiful as that. I had always had an interest in graphics and 3d, though I had never pursued it rigorously. So shortly after that, I quit my job, and spent six months learning Maya and Renderman, with the idea that I would seek a job in visual effects once I got my skills up to speed.

But the right gig just hasn't materialized yet. I have a wife, and if we move, it has to make sense for her too. So in the meantime, I've been working on video effects like these, and a couple other creative projects. Life is pretty good, though lately I've had the sense that I languishing a bit professionally, hence efforts like these to stir up some interest.

Anyway, that was probably way more information than you wanted, but I couldn't help sharing ;-)

Cheers,

Kevin

seriously, you should get in touch with redgiant/etc/whoevs and turn this shizzy into plugins.

that trapcode dude is prob rich, and your stuff will probably sell at a comparable level. and then of course we'll see it used everywhere for like three years straight.

As I was looking at your work I was thinking to myself, "Damn this looks kinda like what some badass programer was doing about a year an a half ago." I found the thread I was thinking of. The good news is that it's you... so there's one less badass out there that you'll have to compete with.

If you don't have plugs available for purchase within the next 6 months I'm going to petition the Admins to ban you for taunting us with your futuristic mograph wares.
