What is your weapon [software] of choice?

Recommended Posts

I am a student in Tampa FL, majoring in Computer Animation. I just found this board don't know how I missed it before. I just want to know what everyone here is using because there is quite a bit out on the market now. Knowing would help anyone new to know where to start, so help is readily available and to know what is actually being used in the industry.

I have been training in Maya, After Effects, Cinema4D.

wow, broad question!

I wrote a massive list but I suppose these 5 will suffice - Blender, After Effects, Cinema 4D, Illustrator and Photoshop.

Bear in mind that you should use whatever software works for the job in hand. If I have an interactive job, I'll use Flash or Director.

OK, here's a real answer.

To realistically work in this field, you need to have expert level knowledge of:

1.Photoshop

2. After Effects

Proficient in:

1. non-linear editor to some degree (premiere, vegas, final cut pro).

2. a 3D app (3DS Max, Cinema 4D, Maya, SoftImage).

Brains (the real tool)

1. Photography

2. Filmmaking - structure, cinematic motion, editing, soundtrack, workflow.

3. Animation - reducing complexity to aid the story, timing, motion.

4. Drawing

5. Writing

6. Communications skills

7. Work ethic

+ many, many more . . .

I actually know the people who wrote that app.

Please pass on my thanks to them, it was the first graphics app I ever used back when I was a kid using my first ever computer, an Amiga 500.

I'm in my last year at SAIC in Chicago and getting scared.

I take graphic design and print classes for typography, animation and 3D modeling classes for motion graphics, and work in a wood shop for cash...I'm pretty good with Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash. OK with After Effects, and just learning Maya. Never used C4D, but I'm looking for it...

I get lost in a sea of software daily!

Am I heading in the right direction? Is there something (besides AE) I should focus on more?

Maybe I'm just paranoid
