Film grain shadow/highlight thresholds

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I've never done any film work, and one thing I have always wondered about were the way grain actually works on film... is there less or more of it in highlights and shadows or is it a uniform amount across the frame?

you are correct, there is no visible grain in white areas, and none in full black areas.... though how much exists in the dark near-blacks depends on the stock and moreso on whether it was underexposed (underexposure = more grain in general, with a bias towards dark areas).

short answer: grain is most apparent in midtones and tapers off as you approach pure white and black.
