Alternative, Self-Coded Flash Folio Site

Recommended Posts

I would like to share my online portfolio site, for comments and criticisms of the mograph community.

This folio site was created by myself in Flash, using actionscript 2. I have little experience in coding, so this was a great exercise for me!

Visit my Folio, and let me know what you think!

I would like to introduce myself as well, I hope this is the right place! My name is Michael Wentworth-Bell, I am a student at Swinburne University in Australia, and have been working with After Effects and 3D (Maya and 3DS) for the last 8 or so months.

I am glad to have finally joined mograph!

cheers,

Michael

Hi Mick,

Unfortunately I could't watch your showreel as the "page" it was on did nothing. the buffering widget showed up, but it wouldn't load. I'm on a stable Chrome, win xp 32bit machine at present (for your debugging pleasure). Similarly, the animation section in the wacom bit took about 2 minutes to load. WTF. If I was an employer, i have to be seriously committed to giving you a chance to sit through all the preloaders before I even got to your work.

A few thoughts on the site in general:

- I liked the icons, the animation was quirky and diverting for about 1 second. But there was no connection between what the icons displayed on the main page and where they linked to. As an interface, it's a failure - another indicator of this is if you have to tell people where to click using some explanatory text.

- Speaking of text, typography is clearly not your strong point. It would be nice to see things laid out better, with greater attention to detail in terms of your spacing (I know flash can work with text quite nicely) and your grammar/spelling/punctuation. There's needless capitalisation all over the shop. One thing I did like was the copy itself, quite entertaining and informal.

Overall, I was initially impressed by the volume of work, but I did wonder why you decided to put that you specialise in so many different things: "motion graphics, film, 3d modelling and animation, web design and sound engineering". That sounds like bullshit to me. If I were you, I'd pick the thing you like doing (which means, generally, the thing you're also best at) and say that's your specialisation. Otherwise you just risk being average at everything.

Finally - get rid of the flash site and replace it with a nice clean fast html one (which would support your skills in WEB DESIGN), or at least leave it as an option at the start. I've never had to wade through so many preloaders in my life. Your video player is the default flash one (fine if you don't specialise in flash, but again this just makes you look like a liar if you can't be arsed to write your own player.) which again is plagued with awful load times and sits on top of the main site. also - PLEASE provide the site with a volume/mute button. The audio is incredibly annoying on the main site.

So my suggestion is just to showcase your content - which wasn't half bad considering you're not out of uni yet - and leave the flash toys on a separate website.

Dan

Hi Dan,

Thanks for taking the time to check out the site and provide a detailed response. I will consider setting up a html only version of the site. That's a good point about 'trying' to specialize in so many things. This is showcasing my work from Uni, and luckily we do a bit of everything there, so It's easier to work out what we want to specialize in by the end of it. I will reword/format my text. I think I was too focused with just getting the work on there without investing enough time into the site itself.

I am also annoyed the site took so long to load for you. I believe there must be a small bug in my preloader if it is not showing right away, i'll look into it. Testing the site myself, it never takes more than 5 seconds to load a page, or start playing a piece of work. That's why there are so many preloaders, so nothing has to load until it needs to. All the work is hosted on my uni's servers in Australia, they are really quick (at least over here!) All the pages are hosted by Hawkhost in Seattle.

Cheers for the Comments, they will be taken on board :)

Just thought I'd add my troubleshooting problems to the list for you to work out. I'm on the latest version of chrome for mac, and all the buttons, their clickable area seems to be at least 100pixels lower than where they should be. So if I ran my mouse along the text in the text box of your main page, i end up actually hovering over your icons without even being near them.

oh damn, i've never seen that before either. Was that only for the top row of buttons? or was the second row of buttons (the row that slides out) stuffed up as well? was that a one off thing, or it happens every time?

interesting, and appreciated that u did all that. one huge bug for me was that i couldnt scroll or navigate easily. grabbing the bar to move down the window didn't seem to intuitive, or carefree of a motion. i don't think u want to have anyone stumbling around for functionality purposes, unless its part of the experience that you're intending
