Hey,

This is the first edit of my demoreel, that I've just finished! I'm looking for some feedback, and any comments/suggestions you may have?

Hope you like it!

You've got some inspiring work! I enjoyed your reel a lot. Your site is good too.

A few comments:

- After watching the G-Nation animation in the motion section of your website, I think you could choose a more dynamic shot, there's a lot of good ones in that piece.

- The flickering in your robot render is from low shadow resolutions in your lights (I think). You can turn up the resolution quite a bit without increasing your render time.

- And finally the piece with smoke and type near the end - some contact shadows where the smoke meets the ground would improve that shot a lot.

I look forward to seeing more!

Nice work! Overall I would cut it down to a shorter reel. It seems like a lot of your work is more 3D oriented and flows nicely with the cuts. I would probably choose to remove the third or fourth shot that is 2.5 AE looking as it seems to break up the flow and feeling of the reel. I would probably also remove the VW bus edit, its a nice render... but not a super polished spot. The music works fine for the most part, but I also feel your work is more along the lines of a NAU or OneSize style edit. Hope this helps somewhat. Keep it rockin

Hey Conrad,

Thank you for your comments, I really appreciate it.

In reply to your comments;

- Regarding the G-Nation animation I agree, i'm just not sure which shot to use! Also I worked with a friend to create that animation, and although I story-boarded it some of the aniamtion is his..

- The flickering on the robot is due to low global illumination settings.. It's something I'd like to fix, but I'm only working on a mac book pro at the moment :)

- Yeah, also something I'd like to fix. I created that a few years ago in Softimage (then XSI..). I was new to particles and for some reason I couldn't get the smoke to cast shadows...!

Thanks again man, Ollie

Thanks Ed,

Some great feedback! Yeah a few people had mentioned the AE shot looks out of place. The reason I included it is due to a job application that required me to show some AE skills.. But I think I'll replace it in the re-edit. The length was tricky, I initially wanted it under a minute. But my work generally has a shower pace to it. I'll try by best to cut it down, steering clear of Michael Bay style editing!

Yeah I like the VW, but I know what you mean. I'm hoping to replace this with something stronger soon :)

I had a look at the company's you mentioned, some pretty amazing stuff!

Thanks again Ed, you've been a great help,

Cheers, Ollie

Ollie your profile picture is ridiculous. You can use any of the g-nation stuff, you storyboarded and directed anyway. I'm gonna put the mountain shot in my reel when i actually pull my finger out.

I know, it was taken in the Vancouver days :) I like the bus shot anyway really, the reflections make it for me. And you can't beat a good old static camera shot here and there :)

Cheers bud, Ollie

You have some nice pieces on there, though I'm left feeling a little confused as to what you do at the end of reel. One part makes me feel you're thing is polished 3D, then it's some 2D stuff, which throws me off but then I'm expecting more variety after that, like you're a generalist that dabbles in everything. Then it's a series of character animation, some of which look like tests. You then mix it up with a mix of 3D pieces, which the cross section piece is one of your better ones. Then I'm hit with that VW bus and there's that arch viz piece.

I would suggest finding out what kind of work you want to do and tailor your reel to the kind of work you want to do. You may be interested in all those things but you'll do better with targeting your reel to what style or the other. If you want to be a character animator then show me character animations. If you want to do 3D motion graphics, show me 3D mograph stuff, etc.

Thank you for your comments, I actually feel exactly that same! The fact is I work for a relativity small design company on a very small Island (Jersey, UK). So I have to tailor my work to make a living.. I consider myself to be pretty flexible, and I enjoy working with other designers and artist to create what the client needs while landing the job. That being said and to ans your question, although my reel might not illustrate it, my specialist skill is 3D modeling. But in resent year I've become more interested in mograph, so by new reel will hopefully include more of that :)

I didn't get your name, but thank you for your msg. I will defiantly take on your advise.

Cheers, Ollie

kind of super greyscalegorilla-ish. not a bad thing if you're not in the US. but i'm going to guess you used his lightkitpro and tutorial to do one of his 5sp.

it was good while it lasted. but the glory days are over. please, no more shiny spheres in a cloner object unless your name be nick campbell.
