Red Scarlet and (rumored) Canon camera November 3rd

Recommended Posts

So I guess the Red Scarlet is going to be officially announced Nov 3rd, and there's also a Canon 'Hollywood Event' announcement on the same day:

We'll see what the final price for the Scarlet is as well as if Canon is going to release a DSLR RED competitor, if it's a camera at all.

I'd have thought most people had learned their lesson about believing anything that comes out of RED by now.

Even if it's not a red competitor would be so stoked if Canon released something with better video capabilities than the current DSLRs and could still use all my current glass on the body.

Scarlet price $9,750 shoots 4k up to 25fps.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/03/red-makes-the-scarlet-dsmc-official-5k-stills-and-4k-video-for/

Canon launched the C300

But more interesting is the 4k DSLR in the works as part of a new EOS Movies line. Will do 4k at 24fps in MPJEG. I'm guessing like the 1D X these new models will have no line skipping and reduced rolling shutter. Looks like Canon saw how popular DSLRs are for video people and are finally making models that will focus on that.

Very curious to see how the compression on the C300 footage holds up when you start to grade stuff. The price point of the scarlet plus the fact that it can take the canon glass is pretty exciting. You couple these cams with pricing on Resolve and it really is mind blowing what you will be able to get done on a fraction of previous budgets (assuming you have the actual talent and know how to shoot and grade of course).

I was fortunate enough help out a bit with one of the short films for the C300 camera debut. The footage holds up surprisingly well. The low-light situations looked like film grain rather than digital noise. We graded in baselight without any issues and it came out looking great. The footage was shot with minimal light in the dark, and I never saw blacks crunch during the color session.

given the price of the Canon, I don't see it being a breakthrough - Sony is already occupying similar ground with the F3, and the Alexa is fantastic and already out there (though pricier)

A bit overhyped considering it won't really change what can be achieved at a particular budget, nice as the footage looks.

Scarlet? Not as cheap as it looks as you can't use 3rd party accessories for the most part. Plus supply and reliability will be issues for quite a while I would imagine. I would be surprised if I see one being used for real for at least a year (here in the UK anyway)

I dunno I think it's more of a game changer than it seems. Even if you price the scarlet at 15K-20K with accessories. There is a lot of good canon glass that is out there versus having to use PL mount and as soon as you get the smaller form factor you can do a lot with cheaper, smaller, lighter, prosumer, gear (tripods, jib arms etc.), fewer vehicles and crew.

There is definitely stuff that could be an alexa shoot, F3, C300, or whatver RED you want and the choice really comes down to preference. But I think there are lot's of situations/budgets where you would have been looking at shooting with a DSLR or prosumer camera and now that same budget could probably acommodate a scarlet or c300 and that's going to open up a lot more possibility in post.</div>
