what would be causing noise in the shadows of the letters?

Recommended Posts

I have a three point light setup around the poker chip with the letters, and global illumination to keep the card suits better lit while their being pushed through z space. is global illumination counteracting with my light rig? Its more of a blocky kind of chatter, than what you would see with an ambient occlusion issue, (which i don't have on).

That "chatter" that you're seeing is the dreaded Global Illumination flicker. Honestly, I don't even think your animation even needs GI.

Try putting in some more lights that only affect the suits and exclude the poker chip and you should be good to go. Also, your render times will drop dramatically.

However, if you're set on using GI, you need to go into your render settings and change the GI mode to something like IR+QMC (full animation) and/or perhaps up the stochastic samples. I would seriously avoid this as you'll just be adding on needless render time.

Good luck!
