what's in a name?

Recommended Posts

Guest C-FU
I remember from my year of Chinese that 'gong fu' means 'leisure time' in Mandarin. I think it's the same Cantonese.

Yeah see that is the problem with not doing proper research. Thinking that syllables will represent the same thing for every word in another language. Oh well. When I find a better way of representing myself. I will change it. BUt for now I will live in the lie. :P

But then again. Who says I can't make up my own Sh!t? :D Like a trend. "That was so C-FU"

blaaaa- who the hell am I kidding.

The Anatomy of Noodles

Nood = Nude

Les = Lesbian

Noodles = Nude Lesbian

Out of common curtosey I decided to use a picture of my favourite meal as an avatar instead of posting an actual picture of a nude lesbian, which would probably have been popular around here...(rrrrr there's something about it, when 2 women get it on) , but I didn't want to distract from my intelectual and interesting posts...and people would just talk to me for one reason only!

Oh, I'm male by the way....never the less, still lesbian though!

I trained with a guy named Dave Friedericks (sp) who was referred to as "Sifu Friedericks" because he's a world champion in Shao Lin Kenpo. So I think you're on the right track.

Kung Fu means 'skill', Wushu (being directly related) literally means 'martial art',

and Sifu means master, so you're on the right track.

DJ KOROVA was my dj name back when i used to play at those "evil rave parties" and clubs. Clockwork Orange is my favorite movie so i named myself after the korova milk bar.

Then i found out korova means "female cow" in russian.

I guess Govinda is my ruler...

It's probably not the same name. The entire Caribbean went through this period about 20 years ago where every kid got a name that started with 'Y.' There's Yannier, Yatier, Yakinai, Yancy, Yorvit...

pokeitwithastick is a Culture ship name from an Ian M. Banks novel called 'Look to Windward'. In his books, Culture ships are immensly powerfull and intelligent and run the Culture itself. Only they tend to be fairly whimsical when naming themselves.

Heres a list:-

Guest krpdesign

mine has boring origins, but a funny story attached. my 1st name is kevin, 2nd name ronald, last name peleschak, and im a designer, hence krpdesign.

the funny story is that when i registered my website, they called me on the phone to confirm. i told them that i was starting to think it looked like "crap design", which might work against me. the guy laughed and said, "oh, i thought it was crip design. like crips and bloods." damn, i wish i was a gangsta. anybody want to start an east coast vs. west coast war?

Way back when, I used to own www.fireminds.net, y'know back when all those "minds" names were all the rage. Of the two years I owned it, it spent 3 months being used as a webhosting reseller with my business savvy Brit buddy Roja (he had ignitedminds.net) before we called it quits, because running a business is way too much damn work.

When i first started this site it was more of a linkdump thing, so i just quickly needed a nick for the admin account and i couldn't be arsed to think of something clever. Never thought I'd still be stuck with it all these years later :/

Frankly it's never been a nick I've warmed up to or felt much association with, but now everyone knows me as such, it would confuse ppl if I changed it.

Guest chibosa

back in the late 80s my handle was chibacitykid inspired by Chiba City, Japan in William Gibson's Neuromancer. After a friend went to jail i gave up my attempts at wanting to be a hacker, so when my evil rave days came on, I would mc and produce tunes under the name Chiba or MC Chiba. As promoters in my area didn't want to put names with possible drug refrences on flyers I went with the nick of Chibosa given to me one nite by a drunken friend. And lately I've just been going by Bosa. its more ppl who know me as chiba, chibosa or bosa than by my real name.

in 8th grade i logged into a bbs and they asked for a handle.. i wasnt sure what that meant but i figured out it meant nickname.. since i was a dork on a computer on a weekend night, in 8th grade i looked at the bookshelf and typed out "talisman" (a la 'the talisman' by steven king)

flashforward a few more dorky years and picture me on irc pretending to be some 31337 dude doing ascii graphics for hacker groups under the name tAliS-X

flashforward to me signing up for aol.. talisman has been taken.. cant use talis-x.. hm, silatix! and wa-la.. ive been confusing people ever since.

Guest hotbuttertrucker

like angry beaver my name came from a move or a trick. It just so happens mine came from another idle way to waste time. "the hottbutter trucker" was a hacky-sack trick where you double-bounce the sack off your knee. A couple of months before I became a member of this fine community I lost one of my best friends in a car accident after the last Phish show. It was Sean Travis (aka. the inbred) who came up with the name. He was no designer, but he was the most creative (and weirdest) person I ever knew. So I pay homage to him, by trying to keep a slightly slanted perspective and not take things too seriously.

Mine came about after getting tired/concerned with my old name/handle... mobcar-media. A friend and I started mob car multimedia studios while I was in college (circa 1995), naming the company after his 1976 Lincoln Town Car... a car with a trunk so big you could fit 4-6 bodies in there.

Back then, the name was great because it immediately began a conversation with people who got a business card, heard the company name, etc. We'd tell them about the Town Car, etc. and we'd all laugh and have a good time... so wonderful. We even went as far as looking into making small replicas of cement shoes as a swag item. We loved that name, and lots of people associated me with it. However, as the years went on (post college), I began thinking that the whole Mafia vibe is not always that great of a marketing gimmick, especially in a town with some underworld activity, so I decided to change it to something a little smoother/jazzier/etc. yet with the same "instant conversation starter" appeal. I wanted something that had some roots in old corporate folklore/practices. I wanted "three martini lunch" or some variation of the phrase, but the domains were taken. After a few word changes, etc., I arrived at my latest... 3rdmartini.

At first, I even had a tagline... "Everything looks better after 3rdmartini." having the double meaning that things look better after you're drunk, and after I've designed them. However, I quickly began thinking that the phrase has a third combined meaning... everything that I've done only looks better after you're drunk. So, I quickly dropped that from my site and identity.

Now, instead of coming off like a hitman, I just come off as a complete drunk. Awesome.

I've had wild fantasies that someday I would be world reknowned for my work only through my alias, kind of like gmunk, renascent, etc. I've still got a way to go before I get there.

I still have mobcar.com... I'm saving it until I have a flash of brilliance that allows me to turn it into some themed design experiment. After 4 years of dormancy, I still haven't come up with that idea.

I know the feeling. I had insideof.us for ages, never knowing wtf to do with it. It was fun thinking of porn related subdomains tho.

I own growthisway.com which I thought was a pretty sweet name for a marketing company. Haven't done anything with it.

Guest sianto

sianto is my middle name. And the origin of this name is really interesting.

My grandfather on my mother's side was a real mistery. He used to say he was chinese. He looked chinese, and had a strange accent. However, his story before 1954 was completely unknown, with no witnesses or friends. Strangely, even though he used to say he was chinese from Shanghai, he used to read japanese mangas, those that look like a big phone book. In japanese. He never went to shool, he used to say. But he used to write letters in spanish, even though he didn't really speak spanish.

He used to say his mother came with him to Brazil in 1915, when he was only 6 months old. And they went to a chinese colony in northern Brazil, in Amapa, the northernmost state. But there is no register of such colony. The only chinese colony in that region existed 50 years before, 500 km away.

He used to say he was a war veteran, from WWII. I believe that. He had this terrible nightmares almost everynight, and would talk about war in his sleep. Sometimes in english, in portuguese, in unknown languages. He used to say he served in an american merchant ship, at the service of the american navy, transporting ammunition and weapons across the Atlantic. But once he mentioned he met Alm. Tojo. That's wierd, that would be impossible if he was serving on the Atlantic.

After he died, some people claimed he was actually brazilian, from Para, and he was their brother. However, he actually looked chinese. My mother looks chinese too. These people don't.

So, of course, i'm fascinated by all this mistery. And strangely, sianto is a common name in Indonesia, India, and is a family name in Italy. There are no other siantos in Brazil, except for his descendants.

All my life people have been calling me sianto, specially in school/college. Maybe because my first name is so common around here (Alexandre).

I believe my grandfather could have been actually a japanese official, hiding in Brazil. Someday i'll do some serious research about all this.

And, of course, i could never use another name, both professionaly and online.

Regards!

When I started college I was playing a game under the names, crazy ace and wild ace…stupid I know. Anyway my roommate a year later got me playing Americas Army and I had not played any online games in a while, I was out of practice and know I would be bad. Out of practice = Rusty, Ace = skill. Hence RustyAce was born and it has stayed two years later useing it for all the forums and such.

Yes I’m a nerd….oh well been called worse.

Upon graduation in May of 04 I decided that needed to come up with an alias. Over the course of a week I came up with several names, although the bad ones far out-weighed the good. The name came to me when I started thinking about design, how it influences me, how I use it. The most important thing to me in design is concept and effective communication. Unfortunately most people dont get to see the heart of the design process... the concept stage. So I decided that Invisible Element would represent the unseen.

Having said that, Im thinking about changing my name to...

ICEMAN

what do you think?

I think it is pretty self explanatory.
