HD / DVD output confusion

Recommended Posts

Guest lowtech

I'm a little unclear about HD quality and exporting onto dvd. Would I be able to make a mg reel in HD resolution (1920x1080) and export it onto a DVD for better quality? Or would there be no increase in quality, and the reel would look messed up because of the large resolution?

:?

There is no HD-DVD format as of today but there are two groups fighting over the format Sony and "The Studios". To author a disc to work on an HD Television, I believe the DVD player just scales up the 16x9 format to file the screen. Which in After Effects is 960x540 then squeezed down to 720x486 - NTSC. Then the DVD player will un-squeeze it when played. I'm not a DVD guy, but I work at the place that does alot of title's, Fight Club, The Beach, The Buffy Box Set, Angel etc.

Good Luck

>>i guess i'll just stick to 720x486 format<<

Lowtech - technically, you should stick to the 720X480 format as that's the native size that MPEG 2 works at (because it uses 16 pixel macro blocks).
