Help with importing illustrator files into AE!?!

When I import a drawing into AE from Illustrator it won't appear visible? What do I need to do?

Is the artwork in Illustrator painted black? or set to no fill and no stroke? If you doble click the layer in Illustrator is the "Visiblity" box check? In After Effects if you place the file in a comp, does it have an Alpha?
