Can any of you pros from Chicago give me your feelings on working in the city. Is there good work in Chicago? What about starting out?

I am wrapping up my schooling and am trying to figure out the best plan for starting a career in motion. You wouldn't believe how many people tell me there is no good motion work in Chicago and that NY and LA are the best places to go to start out in the mo graph scene. Is this really the case. I love Chicago, when it's warm, and would love to stick around.

Also i see posts on here about AE group meetings and motion clubs in other cities is there anything similar to that in Chicago.

Next time someone says there's no good work coming out of Chicago make a d with one hand and a k with the other and put it in their face.

Just off the top of my head. I'm sure there's a few I forgot. Plenty of places to get your feet wet though.. Start with an internship at any of the above for now, get a good reel together.. then if you feel like moving to the coasts in the future you can. But I'm with ya, I love Chicago and the people here.. Even when it's cold.

I've never been to the AE group meetings. I know that Mason Dixon guy runs em and anyone willing to take the time to teach people is ok in my book. http://www.mgchicago.com/

I loved the Chicago mograph scene. There is even a motion graphics themed bar there. Find that in LA or NY.

When I was up there for the 2006 Chicago Motion Graphics Festival it was where the after-party was held. A place called Rodin.

Oh. Yea, Rodan. Must've just been a themed party, it's normally just a swanky bar/restaurant.

I prefer CND Gyros & Lounge to discuss keyframes.

I think Chicago is a great place to work for mograph guys. It feels as if it has been ramping up a bit as well.

There are a lot of events happening throughout the year that are good for networking but I usually don't post them up here since I thought there weren't too many(if any) Chicago dudes on here....guess I was wrong :-)

This is me doing my homework now... I figured you guys could set me straight and give me some insight from working pros. I'm graduation from Columbia and their mograph scene is nonexistent [for instance my advance motion class last week spent four hours introducing and explaining track mattes!] So I've been teaching myself for the past year... but it's time to connect with others in Chicago and try to find work...

That is really unfortunate that Columbia doesn't have a database of companies for you to contact. You are going the right direction, this site is a good resource. Chicago has quite a few mograph companies. Students tend to have the LA/NYC stars in their eyes but there are plenty of great companies under their noses. You can definitely make a go of it here. You can try this as well, not all mograph companies but a comprehensive list of Chicago companies . . .

Do they still meet up? I haven't heard anything other than the MGFest. I'm newish to Chicagoland and've been wanting to meet some others in the mograph scene other than the guys at my company. Anyone up for a Chicago get together?
