Old Dual G5 just won't cut it anymore for me - getting a new mac pro.
This is the list of supported open GL cards for AE CS3
http://www.adobe.com...cts/opengl.html
these are the video cards offered w/ the mac pro
# ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB <--- no???
# NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB <--- no
# NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB <---- what about this guy? - not on list
What are you guys using and are you getting any Open GL benefits from it?
What would you recommend?
thanks!

MacPro and the 8800, but while it seems to work fine in AE7/8, I actually have the OpenGL option turned off most of the time.
There are some (maybe general) hicups when flying around 3D layers. The OGL gets filled and bail out especially when "looking up
in the sky".
Generally fine in Cinema as well, and the same here, I turn OGL on and off depending on the scene (checking shadows and such) but
no OGL crashes. Certain texture projections only looks correct with OGL on, others need to have it turned off.
Cheers

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
Question #1.........Comaptible with older G5?
Question #2.........Can you self install, without a major headache?

#1. These are PCI-express cards and the only G5 that have that is the Quad. But I doubt it will work anyway (drivers and such).
That said I haven't actually checked it.
(Graphic cards on mac is and has always been a mystery to me, so far I haven't seen any real gain in a "better" card, for Cinema
at least.)
#2. Swapping cards is normally not hard but the later Macs (G5 and up) haven't the best locking mechanism...(A plate keeping all cards
in place, sort of)
Cheers

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB + 1
Altho the OGL performence is quite low right now ( on the level of the xt 1900 ), this may ( or not ) be resolved in a later os x grafics driver update.
C4d ( v10.5 / Osx 10.5.2) crashes on many new Mac Pros when doing a OGL preview, you'll have to use software rendering instead.
Enjoy your new box.
Edit, some benchmarks:

I offered a GF 8800 GT to my Mac Pro Rev1
I received it yesterday, and immediately ran some comparison test with the Radeon X1900 XT
Couple of Benchmarks first:
- XBench:
The GF 8800 GT and the X1900 XT obtain similar result, despite the OpenGL performance, higher for the ATI/AMD GPU (might be directly linked to drivers)
GeForce 8800 GT
Results 220.73

Here too, the Radeon seems to be better for OpenGL rendering. This could confirm some reports found on the web, the GF 8800 GT would be a gamer-dedicated GPU while the Radeon X1900 XT would better fit for application-based graphical rendering.
