I know i'm gonna get flamed for even linking anything related to Kramer, but here we go:

WARNING this is a Video Copilot link !!!!!
http://www.videocopi...-in-element-3d/

For those who refuse to listen to him speak, or you are at work and don't want to be mocked for clicking the link, the preview includes:

a little more than particular 3D in After Effects, phaux-mentalray render, primitives, displacement, importable .OBJ's, fairly-simple lighting

Looks like a cool tool. And hey, I'm not anti-VCP. I use Andrew's plug-ins a lot (just finished a spot with a ton of Optical Flare use), it's the kids copying his stuff without any further skill of their own that annoy me. Andrew himself certainly has the chops.

So the question here is, can you take a single hi-res model and use Element as a 3D importer? The placing of a 3D object via embedded PSD sucks, if Element respects AE cameras we might have a winner here.

Yeah it looks great... It's funny i used to have that opinion of VCP when I was a student, I used to make my animations from carefully tweaked still designs and storyboards and get annoyed when somebody else in the class would simply take a VCP tutorial and change the text, that's all I thought it was for - templates. But since then I have found that you can learn so much from the techniques he uses and it's quite innovative sometimes. So thumbs up to VCP as a good resource and learning tool, surely effective motion graphics need to be a mixture of great design AND plugins/effects?

In the end it's all about what you do with it. It's a tool, not a style.

Looks like fun, thanks for the link. You can tell he's serious, there's barely a single 'witty aside' :P

He's quite guarded about the features shown though, nothing about birth options, movement, emitters etc - that could be due to wanting to a gradual tease, or perhaps it's not overly stable... Much as I love and (over)use Optical Flares, it's a bit of a crash-fest.

What platform/version of AE do you use with optical flares? I don't have any problems with it... it's particular that is a real ballache for me, especially switching from CS3 to CS5 I have so many unopenable projects

Well it seems good for small stuff but I want to put it to a real test. I wonder how fast it will explode if you use a model with a decent amount of geometry.

Then again its always easier to do that kind of work in 3d and comp in AE.

But then again it could be cool

This looks like an awesome tool. Can't wait to try it out.

Agreed, this looks fantastic so far. I'm looking forward to seeing how it functions beyond creating cool-looking particle systems though - (ie, how the particles themselves can animate).

I'm excited as well, interested in seeing the rest of this tool's features.

This looks very powerful. I like that you can import your own 3D elements.

It's the Mac interface I think that's the source of my woes - first the custom dialog starts getting twitchy, then it won't open, then AE crashes a few moments later - luckily I can easily spot it coming. Might just be my setup of course but the VC support forum has a few similar stories. Luckily the product is decent so you forgive a few rough edges B)

Looks interesting.

There is nothing wrong with what Video Co-pilot does. Lots of very well produced tutorials and mostly they are free.

If some kids want to fiddle with the Video Co-pilot AE projects and put them on their reel, that's not Kramers fault.

Element 3D is finally taking advantage of what videogames do since ages. In fact I am surprised no other plugins ever worked this way before, I always hoped for this to become true... I believe also Optical Flares uses the same technology. (Is that open GL?)
I believe this is going to set a new standard and will make motion graphics even easier to work with.

Hopefully someone will discover a crash-free implementation.
