RESFEST Digital Film Festival 2005: Call For Entries

RESFEST is seeking the world’s most innovative short films, animation, design films and music videos for our 9th annual global tour. Selected work will screen at over 30 top venues on six continents from São Paulo to Singapore, Tokyo to Cape Town, New York to London, Sydney to Seoul. Audience Choice Awards will be given at the end of the tour. RESFEST showcases work in all genres and visual forms, shot or created in any format. The main criterion is innovation! Entries should have been produced within the last two years and their running time should not exceed 60 minutes. Acceptable submission formats are VHS (NTSC or PAL), DVD (all regions), miniDV (NTSC) and Beta SP (NTSC). Filmmakers have until April 15th to meet the early deadline and May 13th to meet the late deadline.

Which format do you guys think is the best to submit with? I want to submit an entry, and was wondering which format will give the best quality result when they project the pieces. I wish they accepted raw uncompressed quicktime files with audio.

Oh crud, i see what you mean. I never thought anyone would get confused by that. No i have absolutely no relationship to resfest, yes the name Resbot was somewhat inspired by Resfest and res magazine. Maybe I should make a different login name...

Anyways, it seems to me that maybe Beta SP is the best choice, no? I have not had much experience creating dvds and would be afraid of getting noticeable artifacts in the video.

I think Beta SP or DigiBeta is taken most seriously for festival submissions - but doing a batch of DVDs is way more cost effective and is a better format for works-in-progress (allowing for media other than the film) and multidisciplinary endeavors.

Our preference is to preview work on DVD, VHS or Mini DV (in that order)...

If we select the film we want to get it on the best format possible. Digital Beta is what we shoot for. (Beta and Mini DV second choices). We have had final selections come in as uncompressed QTs.

We have to convert PAL works to NTSC (which sucks), so the most stable best looking format makes our life easier.

best,
JW
