C4D Physical DOF vs. Standard

I upgraded to R13 not long ago and came across the Focus Object on the Camera object tab. After playing around with it for a while I noticed that I get different results when calculating distance with depth of field. When I use the Physical renderer the object I want is in focus but when I switch to the standard renderer I notice that it calculates the distance as being further back in Z space and the object is out of focus. What's up with that?
