Where to get good paintings/photographs/art?

01 April 2013 - 04:06 AM

Preferably somewhere in LA that I could actually look at it but open to online stuff if it's cool. Any recommendations?

Psyop's Dishonored spot - Hand Drawn for 3d?

26 November 2012 - 03:42 AM

Has anyone found a good workflow to simulate the hand drawn quality in 3D (preferably Maya or C4D) similar to Psyop's spot (which they did all by hand)?

Seems like you'd want to do an animated texture every couple of frames in the shader (for the grunge), animate a light source or something for the cell shading 'flicker' (either Maya Toon or C4D S&T), wondering about how to do the edges as they move around and occasionally blend between a foreground and background elements. Seems like a lot of Maya Toon or S&T has a cell shaded with outline kinda feel, this has a more random quality.

Also has anyone used Modo's NPR kit? The skull image is pretty close to a sketch look and the ball has that painterly foreground mixed with background:

Black Magic Cinema Camera vs Canon 5D III

22 September 2012 - 02:54 PM

Very promising results for image quality. Curious if any of you have hands on experience with the black magic camera. Now if they would only have removable battery pack...

Cross platform copy file path?

06 September 2012 - 10:34 PM

In OS X whenever I need to send a link to a fellow co-worker or producer I've just been dragging the file into firefox because it will add the "file://" in front of the path so when you email a link it's clickable like a URL (in Mail right click 'open link'). It works but feel like this should be easier so I guess my questions are:

1) Is there a better built in program/droplet/automator action that people are using that add the "file://" in front?
2) Is there a way to also convert that path to a windows compatible path? For example, reversing the slashes and removing the /Volumes/ syntax so that people on PC can have a clickable link in the email as well?
3) And vice versa, in Windows you can just copy the path from Explorer but is there a way to convert that to a Mac path adding the file:// and /Volumes/

I saw someone made an automator service for question 1, haven't tried it yet. Google turned up a bunch of other apps but I didn't see them adding the file:// in front. Wanted to see what you all are using first...

NAS vs DAS (thunderbolt/eSATA) RAIDs

14 July 2012 - 06:50 AM

So I'm having a hard time deciding between a NAS like the Synology DS1812+ (http://www.synology......812+&lang=enu) and using a DAS like the Pegasus Thunderbolt http://www.promise.c...rsn1=40&rsn3=47 or even just an eSATA one until there's more thunderbolt RAIDs available.

This is mainly for home use, in 3D/AE working directly off and rendering to multiple computers, bit of video editing/color grading when needed, and Time Machine backup or general data storage for multiple computers. I like how the NAS won't tie up your workstation if the mini farm is rendering away but am worried the ethernet limitation might be too slow for actually storing and working off the project files. Anyone have experience or done production speed tests with something like this?
