GPU Dependancy

09 January 2014 - 07:48 PM

This morning I was thinking about this a bit for a number of reasons. But, I am curious as to how the community feels about this. We all like the reliability of our CPUs. They are our friendzone machines that are always there for you, rarely let us down and always get the job done.

Then there's sexy GPU. It's a little nuts at times, but fast as a Ferrari. They get a little jealous if you start mix it up with other GPUs. They need constant reassurance and updates.

Moving forward, what do you see yourself wanting? Dependable-get-it-done CPU? Young new GPU?

Obviously "both" is the easy answer. It's great to have that fallback. (Doing development for both is tremendous and costly pain in the ass.) But, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Is it inevitable that our graphics processing should go the route of the graphics processing unit? How would you feel about your precious software starting to move away from CPU?
