I think it was done with a computer.

Seriously, could you be more specific?

Yeah, uh, thanks A LOT, Sao.

The un-SARCASTIC BITCH answer is that it was done with shapes.

I think color may have been part of that technique also. I dunno. We'll have to look it up in the manual.

Can someone please get the manual?

Here is one way. I posted this on AE Freemart a while ago based on a discussion here on mograph:

it is a cool tut. thanks a lot for sharing.

my question is that how come my effect "Levels" doesn't work the same way?

for some reason, it works when I copy your "levels", but it doesn't get red of the blur part when I apply "levels" from myy effects list in AE.

was there anything on the "levels"?

um, I'd like to post my file, but I don't know where and how, so why don't I send you an e-mail with my file for you to see if there's anything different.

thanks a lot.

I think you might be missing the fact that Levels don't just control RGB levels, but Alpha Levels as well.

Here's a mini-tutorial:

Animation was done in Softimage XSI, and rendered with a toon shader to give it that flat look.

Guess Harry took the movie down as it doesn't appear to be there anymore...

New link. FWIW, if you find any dead links on my site (obviously, send me a message), but just change the directory from "downloads" to "downloadItems" and it will work. Sort of bad planning on my part with my new site structure. I wanted a "downloads" section of the site, but I also had a full directory of content already with that name from before.

Also, here's the tutorial that I just realized isn't on my site:

I've watched the short video and I can't get the same results. The file that is linked to is no longer found on graymachine.com. Does anyone have this project file? I'd like to see how to do this and figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks.
