Subtractive colour mixing in Photoshop

Change it to 32-bit and it should be a bit more physically accurate.

 

Edit: Scratch that - I might have lied. I seem to remember getting better results, in terms of color mixing, in 32-bit mode but I can't seem to replicate that at the moment. Sorry, not so helpful.

If you shift right click with your brush you can set the brush transfer mode to multiply then you get that effect. Doesn't work so well with layers though.

 

Painter is good at colour mixing though - haven't used it in years : )
